Services and rate
The first service I offer is to work as hard as possible to make you a giant pile of money so big you can swim around in it like Scrooge McDuck in his money bin. From this I want to make myself 15% of that giant pile so I can swim around in a smaller but still significant pile of money.
On the commercial side of things I will:
- Negotiate contracts to get you the best deal
- Handle the business side of your career
- Monitor sales, review royalty statements, collect money and ensure contractual obligations are met
- Seek to sell foreign rights and strive to make you as much money from a single piece of work as possible
- Explore new distribution methods to increase the audience for your work
Apart from the commercial side (which is significant but hardly the sole reason we're involved in creative work), I've worked as a writer and editor for a number of years so I will:
- Edit your work, book proposal and query materials
- Advise you on the commercial potential of your projects
- Strategise marketing plans
- Work with you to develop career goals and provide career advice
- Be a buffer between you and publishers/editors to ensure you can focus on creative work
- Act as a powerful and positive advocate of your career and creative work
In addition to this, I will conduct my business with the highest ethical standards and maximum transparency. You will receive all copies of rejection letters, contracts, royalty statements and all correspondence regarding your work.
Ze cost?
For this work, I charge 15% commission. This means if you receive a $5000 advance and $1.60 per book royalty, I'll earn $750 and 24 cents per book. For foreign rights sales the commission rate may rise to 30%. The services of an overseas agent may be engaged and they require payment.
No other fees
A commission on earnings is the only money I will ever charge. This means no reading fees, editing fees, printing fees, sandwich fees, transport fees ... no fees of any kind will be charged. Agents that charge such fees are not really agents; they're scam artists in disguise. Money flows to the client, not the other way around.
Agency clause
Contracts will include an agency clause. This means earnings will be paid to the agency, commission deducted and then paid to the client within seven days.
As your representative I can arrange deals and offers and negotiate terms on your behalf but only you will have the authority to make agreements and ultimately sign contracts. You will have final authority to accept or reject offers made to you. This means I cannot sign any contracts on your behalf under any circumstances.
No binding agency contract
You can leave the agency at any time by giving notice in writing via email (or snail mail if you prefer). The agency will still have rights to commission on contracts which the agency negotiated. This means, for example, if a publishing contract were in force for five more years, the agency would collect and administrator royalties for that period.
What happens next?
Should I wish to represent you and you choose to accept my offer, I'll provide you with a document setting out the details of our agreement, including terms and commissions, written in plain English.
